And sometimes, I get email like this…

But it’s been a long, long time!

Just a quick note to let you know I think you’ve assembled the most encyclopedic and thought-provoking Buffy/Angel site on the Internet.  It is absolutely wonderful.

  1. I got my share of fan mail for atpobtvs back in the day. But not lately, and not someone of this kind of expertise.
    Wow!

  2. Thanks!
And every time I get a compliment like that, I think, “Oh, there are so many errors on it! I need to go fix them!”
It’s been on my to-do list for a year now!

  3. Yay! Your site and all your hard work definitely deserve lots and lots of praise! Heh, now I’m tempted to go visit this guy. I know a lot of people who go to/have gone to York. I’ll tell him I’m a Buffy fan too, and that I know you, and he’ll be like, um, crazy person, who are you? *g*

  4. This stuff comes as a surprise just because I don’t work on that site anymore. I did my “Not Fade Away” analysis and was officially burnt out. I want to go back and edit each page for typos, content errors, broken links, etc., but I just have too much else on my plate.
So it’s nice to hear it’s still making a good impression!

  5. Well, I’m going to keep it on line as long as I can do so. The shows will be in reruns and DVD for a long time, I hope!
    Thanks!

  6. He sounds like a fan of the shows, just the way he compares my site to other Buffyverse sites. Plus, you sort of *have* to be a fan to even know what I’m talking about on the site, even if you are already knowledgeable about religion, the humanities, etc.

  7. Eep! I’m still not sure. I will do my best to make a decision this coming week. I’ll need to sit down with my parents again, go over my finances, etc. But I’m leaning toward yelling YES DEFINITELY WOOT! So there’s that. *g*

  8. Fantastic, masq! And he is SO right about ATPo, in EVERY way.
People ARE going to be watching and thinking about BtVS/AtS for a long time, so please do keep the site online as long as you can. Not only is it intriguing, enlightening, and entertaing, but it has also attracted one of the most welcoming, thoughtful, creative, funny, and generally level-headed group of Buffy/Angel fans on the net.
Sadly, I’ve never been able to attend an official ATPo gathering, but one of these days, maybe I can thank you all in person.

Who I am thankful for every day!
    Thanks!

  10. Re: Don’t be boggled, it is true.
    The sky is blue?
    I have ten toes?
Connor is the best character in the Buffyverse?
    ; )

  11. Yes, clearly I should leave the intimidating to my friends! *g* No, my mom has promised not to guilt-trip me this year. And I’ve made some money so it’s not like it’s impossible either. IOW, almost nearly sure I’m going 🙂

  12. I think you’ve assembled the most encyclopedic and thought-provoking Buffy/Angel site on the Internet. It is absolutely wonderful.
Oh heck. I thought everyone knew that by now. (grin)

  13. How come a big toe is called a big toe, but a thumb is called a thumb? Because a thumb’s opposable, and therefore special? It seems a little unfair.
    TCH

  14. Oh, so now we’re going to get into a philosophical discussion about whether I, in fact, have ten toes??
*Throws Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus at you*

  15. Yes I’m sure it is. We just added an autoarchive to our site to take the pressure off our webmistress who’s got a 14 month old so I’m actually busy with that (especially for some reason it won’t load certain stories)

  16. I think I need to hire an editor to go through each page of my site and point out typos and potential content problems. Then I can fix them little by little.

  17. You can argue with the blueness of the sky,
You can argue with the number of my toes.
But don’t argue with me about Connor, ’cause I got an even BIGGER BOOK to throw atcha.
    ; )
Not that I’m prone to philosophical violence, or anything.

  18. I never get anything beta’d. The Destroyer is unbeta’d. ATPoBtVS is unbeta’d. My episodes of Season 6 never got beta’d, at least not the parts I contributed to.
Which explains the stray typos, the content errors, etc, etc. There’s been a few times I’ve gone back, for example, in The Destroyer long after the episode is written and posted and commented on and CHANGED stuff to make it consistent with future episodes.
And, well, naturally I go back and fix typos if I see them.

  19. My method is to put up an unbeta’ed or barely beta’ed draft to beat the dead line of whatever the hell I’m writing it for. Then by the time it hits OUR site, it’s been beta’ed to death because I’m just paranoid that way. I want things to look perfect (good luck) and I know I won’t get there on my own.

  20. The whole concept of beta’ing was new to me when I got involved in all this fandom stuff. No one ever beta’d my college and grad school term papers; you were just expected to be contentious about fact-checking and spelling and grammar, not to mention doing your own work. And while I had a dissertation adviser guiding my dissertation, that was scholarly work whereas a bit of fan fic is just a bit of fan fic.
That said, I had people writing me about typos and alleged canon screw-ups from time to time while I was working on atpobtvs. If I agreed with them, I just fixed it retroactively.

  21. For me I’ve been writing for sale for years now. That always requires some kind of editing. I’ve been using fellow students and writers groups since the 80’s so it was second nature to me.

  22. I’ve been in writing groups where I ran my stuff past other writers, and with my novel, I had a woman reading it and giving me feedback on it for two years. I never thought of that as “betaing”, but I guess it is.
I guess I see a difference between those “real” pursuits, and fandom stuff. Anyone can throw up a website and be a BtVS/Angel fan, but getting a novel published or a dissertation written require a higher standard.

  23. Well I’ll grant you that. I do NOT by any means put as much effort into my fan fic as I do my other fic but I am putting more effort into it now that online makes it that much easier for anyone to pop in and see what’s going on including the actors etc

  24. Well, I definitely try to make my fandom pursuits–atpobtvs, Season 6, and The Destroyer–as well-written, “scholarly”, and free of error as possible. That’s just standard for me.
But it’s been six years, and as far as I know, Joss has never once stumbled over my website, nor do I think the publishers of tie-in novels nor television executives will just happen upon my fan fic. At least, not that they have told me.
    ; )

Sadly neither have they on mine but they HAVE on other people that I know (well in Xena and Star Trek fandom) that have lead to publishing contracts. Sigh.
